comparative rates of increase of black and white populations

“During the last hundred years the Negro increase has been almost entirely the product of an excess of births over deaths. There has been little immigration since 1840. In contrast, the white population has been swollen by the largest overseas migration in history.”

Dudley Kirk, The Fertility of the Negro (1940)

This trend shifted after the immigration reforms of 1965 that removed country-based immigration quotas, and the rate of increase of the Black population jumped to double the increase in White population.

Census race categories continue to change to reflect current thinking, and for the first time in 2020 “some other race” was the second highest category after “White”, and the share of White population appears to drop sharply.
